Welcome to the Village of Black Earth
web site
Feel free to send us your questions or comments. |
An 1877 regional history of Dane county locales, published in Madison,
described the Village of Black Earth with an almost contradictory ambivalence. In 1880, Black Earth was a
thriving business community. The town had its own harness makers, shoemakers, a
general machine shop, three blacksmiths, two planing mills, a wagon maker,
various carpenters, four saloons, three grain merchants and three stock buyers.
The Black Earth Residents founded the first co-op in Wisconsin and it is still
in existence today.
Since then, the village has grown to a community of 1374 residents, including
31 businesses. Black Earth contains a public library, three church
congregations, two day cares, a preschool, the largest independently owned shoe
store in the midwest, and two elderly facilities. Black Earth has both a local
medical and dental clinic. Mazomanie, and Black Earth joined together to build
a new middle school (which included the grades of 6-8) and remodel the high
school.
The Village of Black Earth offers a friendly, small-town atmosphere with easy
access to business and recreational opportunities in Madison. People are
attracted to the area's natural beauty and the many benefits it offers. Black
Earth has one of the top ten trout streams in the nation. Black Earth is known
for its home talent baseball team.
In the past 10 years the downtown area of Black Earth has undergone renovation
including a new village hall which includes the village office, library, and
the police department, a new bank, dental clinic and insurance office are also
located in the down town area. Black Earth is very proud of its past and is
looking forward to the future.
Proximity to Madison. This area is the
second-largest market in the state. Madison is the state capital and home of
the University of Wisconsin, one of the county's most respected universities.
There are many financial, health care, and insurance services available in the
city.
Transportation routes. Black Earth is located in
US Highway 14. About 14 miles west of US Highway 18/151 and the Beltline around
Madison. Proximity to I-90 and I-94 offers easy access to major metropolitan
cities. Milwaukee is about 95 miles to the east, Chicago lies 155 miles to the
Southeast and Minneapolis-St. Paul is 255 miles to the northwest.
Tax Rate-The tax rate in Black Earth is one of the lowest among the neighboring
communities. |
